Hacks For a Plant Based Diet

If you’ve been thinking about going meatless and diary free, but just don’t know where or how to start!  These hacks will help you get started.

1.  If you are still eating flesh food and are accustomed to having it 3 times daily, try to gradually start to reduce your intake until you are able to only consume flesh food once a day.   Eventually reduce your consumption to 3-4 times a week then 1-2 a week.  Replace flesh food with meatless options such as: Portabella mushrooms, or nut meats, beans, lentils, chick peas veggie burgers, almonds, cashews, and walnuts. There are a few brands that offer meatless options that have the consistence and flavor of chicken and burgers but these are highly processed but can be used as a bridge until you began to make your own.   (Eliminating red meat and pork should be the first focus).

2.  Replace cow milk with almond, rice or coconut milk try them to see which one you like best.  Nut milks come in different varieties, original, vanilla and they range in sweetness, I prefer to make my own or use the original 60  (Sometimes I mix  almond and coconut milk together, depends if you like a thin or thicker mouth feel).

3.  Incorporate 3 fruits a day (breakfast/lunch/snack) and 5 vegetables.  Prep your fruits and veggies so you have them ready when you want to snack and place them in containers or ziploc bags.

4.  Nuts and seeds are a great source of plant protein and help keep you full.  I measure out a quarter cup and snack on them throughout the day or pair them with fruit for a quick snack.

5.  Oatmeal, steal cut oats, or oat groats mixed with nuts like walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, or chia seeds combined with banana, blueberries, or strawberries or other fruit are nourishing, delicious, and filling. All of these can be prepared hot or cold.  If you choose to try them cold they will require soaking.  When I am in a hurry I use a 1/2 cup of rolled oats, with almond milk, nuts, raisins and fruit prepared in a maison jar, after a few hours the oats are soft enough to eat.

6.  Substitute bacon and eggs with scrambled tofu and vegan sausage. (I consider tofu and vegan sausage bridge foods, meaning they are still processed but they are not the flesh of animals and eventually you will be able to make your own sausage).

7.  Smoothies are great anytime, get creative with them.  A good base can be spring/purified water, coconut water, nut milk, or 100% juice with kale, spinach, arugula, mixed greens, collard greens or cilantro, add berries, bananas, peaches, pineapple, or mixed fruit.  Add a few dates if you like your smoothie really sweet.

8. Lunch/dinner enjoy meatless  tacos ,burritos, veggie  burgers, vegetarian pizza, spaghetti and so many other entrees can be served meatless. (Try lentils, black beans, veggie crumbles, and mushrooms there are a variety of beans and legumes).

9.   Add grilled vegetables to salads top them with with plant proteins

10. Don’t be afraid to be creative take other recipes and make them into your own. There are countless vegan options, you don’t have to be confined to eating salads and beans and rice.  Have fun on your journey to a healthier you!

Get Your Sleep On!

benefits-of-sleep

“It is more of a health benefit to receive 2 hours of sleep prior to midnight then 4 hours after midnight.” I have paraphrased this quote written nearly over 100 years ago by Ellen White.  The battle for sleep is real!   I am up during the week by 5:30 a.m. I often try my best to retire by 10:00 p.m. most of the time it’s by 11:00 p.m. I notice a difference an hour will make. Most of us are sleep deprived. The benefits of sleep is worthy. Seven hours for me is idea and eight is icing on the cake. If we want good health, sleep is essential.  Try these tips to get to bed earlier and get 7-8 hours of rest.  Plan on eating dinner and having the kids ready for bed prior to 8:00 p.m. Take an hour for yourself, 10 min. stretch workout and  20 min. for a hot bath.  Prepare a hot cup of ginger, chamomile tea, or warm almond milk.  Stray away from any unsettling noise or activity, listen to soft music or read and meditate.  All lights and televisions off by 9:00 p.m.  there are phone apps that will silence cellphones so your sleep will go uninterrupted.  Happy sleeping!

Colon Health

Vegan Salad
Vegan Salad

Eating a healthy diet filled with leafy green vegetables and fruit will help keep you regular.  Many suffer from constipation and rely on laxatives for relief.  It is important that waste is removed from the bowels daily.  Food can ferment in the stomach and cause gas and constipation.  Try incorporating a salad at least once a day or for both lunch and dinner.  Eat fresh fruit in the morning or when you feel the urge to snack. Remember to drink plenty of water.

When you are able to eliminate waste known as toxins you will become more energized.  It is important to keep the bowel waste soft and moving so there is no straining at the stool. It is important that when the body gives the signal to eliminate, the waste is not held back. If you do not respond to the body’s signal to eliminate waste two things will occur: 1. Some of the waste will be reabsorbed into the body and be the cause of ill health. 2. Eventually the body will stop giving you the signal to eliminate which is one of the causes of constipation.

A frequently asked question is what herbal extracts are and why do they contain a neutral alcohol. Herbal extracts are herbal plant foods that have been diluted in a liquid that dissolves or suspends them. This is a “natural medicine”. An herbal extract can be made with something that allows an herb to dissolve in it. This can include most common liquids, such as water, vinegar, wine, glycerin (sugar and fat compound most commonly derived from animal tissue) or a neutral alcohol. When you put an herbal tea bag into a cup of hot water, the color, taste and aroma which dissolve into the water make an herbal extract. However, some parts of the herb in the tea bag do not dissolve in water. Water will not dissolve the oily, waxy, detergent, enzymatic or hormonal content of the herb. Vinegar, wine and glycerin substances will dissolve a small amount of this. The fact is that a combination of water and neutral alcohol is the best fluid known for dissolving all parts of an herb. A water and neutral alcohol extract provide an herbal food in a “predigested” form. It should be noted that when you get the full strength of an herbal food a little goes a long way – so don’t over eat. This is a “natural medicine” made from an herbal food. The concept of moderation is the key. Extracts are intended to be used to supplement the diet with herbal foods in an easily absorbable form. Most people are not even aware that they may be carrying around as much as ten pounds of rather disgusting debris coating the surfaces of their digestive canal (stomach, small and large intestines). This debris forms a barrier between the food that is eaten and the absorption of the needed nutrition. This means that the digestive system needs help.

3 Things the Body Needs to Stay Healthy!

SmoothieOur bodies function on a cellular level.  Our cells make-up our tissues, and our tissues form bones and organs, which makes our systems.

In order for our bodies to function at its peak level , we must first take in nutrient rich foods to feed our cells. take in clean air to oxygenate our bodies to ensure proper circulation, and expel waste to rid our bodies of toxins.

When we decide what to feed or nourish our bodies we are building our health organs or not.
